Background

After the handover in 1997, Hong Kong had gone through massive changes and Lee Tung Street (a.k.a. Wedding Card Street) is one of those. In a traditional point of view, wedding unites two families and Honghonger see marriage as one of the most important thing in life. From the mid-20th century, wedding card shops gathered in Lee Tung Street where it becomes a symbol of local culture. However, the HKSAR government announced a rebuild scheme in early 2000 which all shops and residents will be evicted. Protest was made but did not change the government’s decision. The street is now immersed in a new shopping/residential area.

Production

Sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the musical premiered in 2011 in Hong Kong as a “Jukebox Musical” featuring Canto-Pop music. The story begins with a documentary film director interviewing three residents where he discovers how they feel about their roots and how they face changes. The three residents represent different reaction regarding the rapid changes. There will be re-writes to accommodate the new issues came up after 2011 and original songs will be written to replace Canto-Pop music in the future productions. The musical feature nine actors and a live band of three musicians. There will be bamboo scaffolding as the set to suggest the rebuild process and also to give a Hong Kong touch.
